Description

Guernsey State Park provides seven campgrounds. Five are around the lake. All campgrounds include comfort stations, picnic tables, fire grills and drinking water. We also have a trailer dump station located at the south entrance to Guernsey State Park. This park provides the finest examples of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) work in the Rocky Mountain area. Built by the CCC, the Guernsey Museum, the Castle and Brimmer Point are available to explore. The museum is perched on a high cliff, overlooking the water. The building itself is made of hand hewn timbers and hand forged iron. The roof is framed with the timbers and covered with split cedar shakes, and the floors were formed by pieces of smooth flagstone. The Castle, with its giant fireplace and winding steps, leads to an observation area for a spectacular view of the park.

An extensive network of trails was originally planned and partially built during the operation of the CCC camps. Ever since that time hiking and trail use has been a major feature at Guernsey State Park. Approximately ten miles of CCC trails have been restored on the park. Starting point for the trail system is at the Brimmer Point turnoff. The trail system consists of several loops which provide a variety of scenic views of the park, reservoir and the dam. Most of the trails are moderately physically demanding.

Directions:    Guernsey State Park is located off Interstate 25, Exit 92 to U.S. Highway 26 and then State Route 270.

Additional Info:    The Oregon Trail was one of the primary routes used by the immigrants' westward migration across the plains from 1841 to 1869. Today, in many parts of Wyoming, remnants of The Oregon Trail can still be seen. Some of the best examples are the "ruts"; located just 1/2 mile south of the town of Guernsey, off Highway 26.

Register Cliff located two miles southeast of Guernsey provided travelers with a "chalkboard" where they placed their names for those who followed. The landmark still remains much the way it looked to pioneers on wagon trains journeying West.

Greatest place on Earth!

My family has been enjoying Lake Guernsey since I was a young child. I have seen a lot of changes in the years. I remember the speed boat races up and down Sandy beach, camping bumper to bumper and going up on a last minute decision. What a great experience as a child growing up. Lots of good memories! I have my own family now and it doesn't seem the same. Now you have to schedule your camping trips to Guernsey if you want a camping space and thanks to the folks that have figured out how to cheat the reservation system, it is almost impossible. The park rangers are nice, yes, but let us have our space and enjoyment with our music and freedom of being away from home. Lake Guernsey is our favorite place on earth!

Love It!

Wonderful camping experience (with Motorhome). Love the lake and area. Used to come here several times each summer in the 80's/90's. Started coming back last year. Two down sides are the partying late at night on the week-ends, and the difficulty making a reservation for the dates you want. You have to almost be on the internet at midnight 90 days before you want your reservation to be guaranteed the dates you want.

What a GREAT FAMILY EXPERIENCE! We were originally supposed to go to Glendo, but based on their reviews chose Guernsey. Beautiful lake for camping, swimming, boating, biking, and the scenery! WOW!! Be sure to take your camara. Only saw the rangers a couple of times a day go by our campsite. The campsite was very clean and gave campers enough space between them for some privacy. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be returning.

What A Blast!!

The trip to Guernsey State Park from the Denver Metro Area is a pleasant, relatively short drive. We pulled our 36 ft travel trailer and our brother drove his RV. As we drove towards the park, we thought that the terrain told the story - remote, dry, no trees to speak of, out in a not-so-inviting area. But, we we wrong! After stopping to get directions to our reserved campground at the ranger station, we began a trip up and down, curving back and forth, getting ever so closer to the most beautiful, tree lined, sandy beach area that is close to Denver that we had been to all year. Although we made a wrong turn, had trouble pulling our 8600 lb trailer up a steep incline, the roving ranger stopped to point us in the right direction. Our spot was in a "cul-de-sac" setting with 5 spots. We were close to the water, but we preferred to go to the sandy beach to swim. We drove ATV's over sandy backroads and hills, had a campfire, walked in the moonlit night, watched eagles fly overhead, slept in the quiet surroundings, and shopped in the quaint town of Guensey. The facilities were clean, the grounds were well kept, the people were friendly. What more could you ask for? We had a blast!!
