Keyhole State Park is not for those wanting all the amenities, it is for those that want to "rough it" and just have an amazing time. The fishing is Great, the tubing/skiing so much fun for the kids. The beach is different each year with the abundance or lack of water, making it smaller or larger. There is camping on both sides of the Lake. The Pine Haven side has a local grocery store, a supper club, a laundry mat and more. The 4th of July is the best....the Pine Haven side has a BBQ for those that bring a side dish, and the fireworks over the lake (unless to dry (burn ban))are absolutely amazing, especially if you are out on the lake watching. I think that your vacations are what you make them....take fun things with you....and you WILL have fun.

reunion at keyhole

Eleven of us surrounded our wagons(campers) and boats at a group site at Tatanka. The site is just out of the trees on a little finger point not far from the marina. Site 40 had lots of privacy for a larger group so we could have fun and not annoy other campers. The kids had plenty of room to play catch, run down to the water's edge or just enjoy the center of camp to eat and sit around the camp fire. There was plenty of room to park extra vehicles if friends showed up during the day. This site had water and electricity and was fairly level. If you are boating the spot to park boat trailers is a ways from the dock. I had a Kawasaki Mule there to run around in and it came in handy to give a ride back down to the marina. Nice marina with basic needs like ice and fuel. Also rented a pontoon boat from there. We spent time out on the water, tubing, swimming, fishing, cliff jumping, wake boarding(yes, someone had a big fancy boat ;-)) Keyhole is a great place to camp, relax, have fun.

Beautiful rustic campground

I just read the camper reviews and all I can say is people should research a park before they plan on camping there. This is a beautiful park with a variety of campsites to choose from, either on the lake or further away with more privacy. You have your choice between tent sites, rustic trailer sites, or sites with electricity and water. We have free camping after the purchase of a very low cost annual permit, or a very reasonable cost for the electical/water sites. Know before you go and you won't be disappointed! If you want a campground with all the amenities, this may not be the one for you!

not what I expected

A beautiful resevoir, but no amenities. Unless you come with a camper, I do not recommend this area. We came with a tet, paid for an electric-equipped site, but got there and realized there is nothing to the ground but rocks and sand. there is nothing to prevent your tentfrom blowing away or down. It is also a very primitive camp, with only pit toilets available and no showers - no problem for me, but a big NO for my husband.

while traveling via car and tent last year we camped here. The campers next to us (we were tent camping) had their generator on all night and the place to pitch our tent was not the best level ground in the world. While we did not take a shower in their facility as we heard it was not hot water, we did hear that across the lake there are hot showers available.

We were camping for the 4th of July and Geocaching for a week around the area. We enjoyed the near by sites like Devils Tower, Gillette, even when as far as Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse, SD. We used the camp for base camp then went on day trips around the area. The camp site we had for our tent was ok but the grass looks like it could have been mowed several weeks ago, the grass around our tent was 18 inches high. It would have been nice to know before we picked a site that the only water for camp is from one far away high pressure bib. We had to take showers in Gillette, WY at a truck stop! The only showers for over 100 campers was 2 broken showers near the marina. The 1 shower that had cold water had exposed live wires on the wall. Talk about not safe. No lighting was at the camp sites. The only good things about this camp ground was the parking was big but not close to the camp site. The bathroom was ok for a primative area. And the location to see and visit the area. It looks like the camp ground was due to a major overhall. I hope the State improves this Camp. Next time we visit we will stay in South Dakota.
